Wayne County’s population grew by 19.5% – from 39,944 to 47,722 – during the 1990’s, having the third-fastest rate of growth of any county in the Commonwealth. Though at the leading edge of expansion from NY/NJ metro areas, Wayne County is still rural in character. Nearly a third of the population (30.9%) is in the 25-44 age category, considered the years of peak earning and production. The vast majority (80.9%) of individual over the age of 25 possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and 14.6% have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Regional Growth Altogether, Wayne County and neighboring Monroe, Pike and Lackawanna represented a population of 446,006 persons in 2000, having added 63,290 persons over the decade. The region experienced a net growth rate of 16.5% compared to Pennsylvania’s overall 3.4% gain. The New York and Northern New Jersey Metropolitan Area grew by 8.4%, indicating that Wayne County and its neighbors represent the leading edge of that region’s expansion.
