WIRED / Wall Street West

Wayne County is one of nine counties participating in the WIRED (Workforce Innovation and Regional Economic Development)/ Wall Street West initiative. The project’s main goal is to transform the nine-county region into the premier back-up operations location for Wall Street firms.

Wayne County’s own Sterling Business Park could ultimately benefit from this initiative. With construction anticipated to begin early 2008, Wayne County will soon be prepared to serve Wall Street’s back-up offices with a highly-skilled workforce, as well as an excellent location.

Welcome to Wayne County

WEDCO is developing one of the best sites in the northeast – STERLING BUSINESS PARK– a 252- acre mixed use business park in the Pennsylvania I-84 Corridor. This Wayne County park sits within the fastest-growing region in the northeastern United States. It has all the affordability of a Pennsylvania location, while providing superior access to the New York, New Jersey and New England markets.

Sterling Business Park offers the “must have” qualities of a business park – superb highway access, lower costs, and a growing labor pool – all wrapped up in a uniquely rural setting. Capturing and maintaining this rural character is part of our design and the natural beauty of our wooded areas and mountain stream provides an excellent canvas for companies wanting a campus-like feel. Click on the link to the left for site selection data and approved site plans.

As Wayne County’s lead economic development organization, WEDCO provides necessary services to businesses that want to relocate or expand in our communities. We also support businesses that are here, helping them improve productivity and prosperity and foster the economic growth of our County.

Sterling Business Park Executive Director Update
January 2010 - I was driving by Sterling Business Park with colleagues recently when one mentioned that it did not look like much was going on with the development of the park. I realized then how deceptive progress is when you don’t see big bulldozers moving dirt. Indeed, much is happening with the project, both construction-wise and in establishing the marketing, maintenance and future operations of the business park.

Our initial two construction contracts for Phase 1 infrastructure are almost complete. Linde Corporation is finishing the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and testing will occur when the weather warms in Spring. Their work is on the east side of the property near the Wallenpaupack Creek. The sewage system includes the WWTP, sewage collection lines and water re-use system. Effluent will be treated and non-potable water pumped to a 230,000 gallon holding tank at the high spot on the property. This is believed to be the largest water re-use project in the Commonwealth.

$3.2 MILLION GRANT WILL STRENGTHEN STOURBRIDGE RAILROAD
January 2010 - Wayne and Pike Counties received a huge boost with Gov. Rendell’s recent announcement of a $3.2 million grant from PennDOT’s Rail Freight Capital Budget /Transportation Assistance and Rail Freight Assistance Programs for the Stourbridge Railroad.

Over a three-year period, the Stourbridge Railroad will perform the first meaningful upgrade/rehabilitation of the 23-mile shortline in 40 years. This work will increase capacity for commercial use of the line as well as add the benefit of speed for passenger service. Railcar payload will increase to 100-ton, which is comparable to four truckloads. Following the upgrade, trains will be able to move along the track at 25-30 miles per hour, which means that the roundtrip to Lackawaxen will be approximately the same duration as the current trip to Hawley.
